Microsoft Defender managed configuration for Android
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Android reads a set of configuration keys that control what it scans, what it reports and how users onboard. Microsoft's documentation presents them for Intune, either as a managed devices policy or as a managed apps policy. The keys are plain restriction names, so this page lists them as such. Check how your EMM sends integer restrictions before you roll them out. Some keys appear only in the managed apps article, so test them on a device before you send them another way.
Let staff skip the VPN and accessibility prompts at first launch, hide the sign-out button and tag the devices by site. Web protection stays off or partly active until people grant those permissions in the app.
Key names and value types come from the vendor’s documentation. The explanations are written by Nomid.

Web protection
antiphishing
Choice: 1 on, 0 off
Turns anti-phishing protection on or off. Microsoft documents it in the managed apps policy.

Choice: 1 on, 0 off
Controls the local loopback VPN that web protection uses. Set it to 0 with antiphishing on to keep phishing checks without the VPN.

Turns network protection on or off. The other network protection keys only take effect when this one is on.

2
DefenderCertificateDetection
Choice: 0 off, 1 audit, 2 on
Controls detection of malicious certificates, with the same audit and on behavior as open network detection.

Permissions
Permissions Microsoft Defender asks for
Runtime permissions people are prompted for. A Nomid policy can grant, deny or leave each one to the person using the device.
Permission
Android name
Why it asks
Common choice
Location
android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION
Needed to detect threats on open or suspicious Wi-Fi networks. Microsoft recommends the all-the-time option for full protection.
Grant
Background location
android.permission.ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION
Lets network protection keep checking Wi-Fi while the app is closed. Without it Defender still checks certificates but not open networks.
Find it on Google Play from the policy’s apps list and choose how it is installed.
Step 2Set its managed configuration
In the policy, set the app’s managed configuration with the keys and values from this page.
Step 3Assign the policy
Devices in the policy receive Microsoft Defender and its configuration on their next sync.
Questions
Microsoft Defender on managed Android
What is Microsoft Defender's package name on Android?
com.microsoft.scmx. It is the Defender for Endpoint app that appears in Google Play as Microsoft Defender.
Does this need Intune?
Microsoft only documents the Intune route, as managed devices or managed apps policies, and says Intune app protection can also cover devices enrolled with another EMM. Mobile threat defense reporting and conditional access rely on a Defender and Intune connection. Microsoft does not document sending these keys from another EMM's managed configuration, so test them on a device first.
Why do some keys have two spellings?
The managed apps article gives the raw key names. The managed devices article shows friendly labels in Intune's designer, and only names a few raw keys. This page uses the raw names throughout.
Does Defender scan the personal side of a work profile phone?
No. Microsoft says Defender respects Android profile boundaries and cannot reach files in the personal profile.
